FAQ

Why should I think about the 10 Essentials for thru-hiking?

People will say, "Well, this isn't the lightest setup."

Our answer to that is: What happens if your gear breaks, you get lost, cold, or hurt? How do you recover? How do you self-rescue?

Every system has some of the 10C items. It's absolutely critical that you think about this before you head out. The difference between a successful adventure and a dangerous situation often comes down to having the right essentials when things go wrong.

Ultralight is great — until it isn't. The gear we curate balances weight with capability, because preparedness isn't optional.

How does FoxtrotGear work?

FoxtrotGear curates mission-specific gear systems rather than carrying a massive catalog. We focus on selecting the best lightweight, durable, and field-tested products for specific objectives so customers don't have to guess or overbuy.

To do this efficiently, many items ship directly from our brand partners using Shopify Collaborative fulfillment. This allows us to offer top-tier gear without unnecessary delays or inflated pricing.

Where does my order ship from?

Most products ship directly from the manufacturer or authorized brand partner. This ensures authenticity, proper handling, and faster access to in-demand gear.

As FoxtrotGear continues to grow, we will also stock and ship select products directly — but curated drop-ship fulfillment is intentional, not temporary.

How long does shipping take?

Orders typically process and ship within 3–5 business days, depending on the brand and product.

Shipping timelines may vary slightly if an item ships directly from a partner, but we only work with companies that meet our reliability standards.

Do you stock products yourselves?

Some products will be stocked and shipped directly by FoxtrotGear, but many items currently ship from trusted partners. Each product page will clearly indicate if there are any special fulfillment considerations.

This model allows us to stay focused on curation and performance — not warehousing filler gear.

What is your return policy?

We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on eligible items.

To qualify for a return:

  • Item must be new, unused, and in original packaging

  • Return must be initiated within 30 days of delivery

Customers are responsible for return shipping costs unless the item arrives damaged or defective.

How do I start a return?

To initiate a return, contact us at support@foxtrotgear.com with your order number and reason for return. We'll provide return instructions based on the product and fulfillment partner.

Returns sent without authorization may be refused.

Are there items that cannot be returned?

Yes. Certain items are non-returnable, including:

  • Custom or special-order products

  • Clearance or final-sale items

  • Products showing signs of use or wear

These exclusions will be clearly noted on the product page when applicable.

Why don't you carry more options for the same product?

That's intentional.

FoxtrotGear exists to remove decision fatigue, not create it. We only carry products that meet our standards and fit within specific mission profiles. If something is listed, it's because we believe it belongs there.

How do you test your gear?

Gear is selected based on extensive research, hands-on use, and real-world deployment — including use in A.R.C. (Acclimating Recon & Civilian) training environments. If a product doesn't perform under realistic conditions, it doesn't stay in the catalog.

How does A.R.C. fit into FoxtrotGear?

FoxtrotGear donates 5% of proceeds to A.R.C. (Acclimating Recon & Civilian), a nonprofit focused on outdoor skills training, veteran mentorship, and preparedness education. This partnership helps validate gear and supports the people teaching others how to use it properly.

Additional FAQ (Curation, Testing, Community)

Can customers suggest gear for FoxtrotGear to evaluate?

Yes. We welcome suggestions.

FoxtrotGear exists because we believe most people shouldn't have to experiment with their money. If there's a product you think belongs in a specific mission category, you can suggest it for review.

That said, not every suggestion will be accepted or carried. Products must meet our standards for weight, durability, pack compatibility, and real-world usefulness.

How do you decide what gear makes the cut?

We don't curate by brand popularity or trends.

Products are evaluated based on:

  • Mission relevance

  • Weight and pack-volume efficiency

  • Durability under real use

  • Simplicity and reliability

  • Whether it actually solves a problem in the field

If a product doesn't justify its space and weight, it doesn't belong — even if it's popular.

Do you test products before selling them?

Yes — but realistically.

Some products are tested extensively before being offered. Others are evaluated through a combination of hands-on use, trusted field data, and deployment in training environments. In some cases, a product may be listed while ongoing evaluation continues.

If we discover a product does not perform as expected, we remove it. Period.

Will FoxtrotGear publish gear testing or reviews?

Yes — selectively.

We plan to maintain a testing and evaluation section where we document how gear performs in our environments and training scenarios. These are not sponsored reviews and not influencer content.

If a product performs well, we'll say so.
If it doesn't, we'll explain why — or quietly stop carrying it.

Does FoxtrotGear sell every product it tests?

No.

Testing does not guarantee inclusion. Some products are useful, but not useful enough to justify carrying them within a curated system.

Our goal isn't to sell more gear — it's to sell the right gear.

Why don't you carry multiple versions of the same item?

Because choice paralysis gets people hurt.

We limit overlap intentionally. If there's only one option listed, it's because we believe it's the best fit for that mission profile.

We'd rather say "this works" than "pick one."

Can FoxtrotGear test gear in different environments?

Yes, within reason.

Testing environments vary depending on the mission category — backpacking, bushcraft, self-reliance, or preparedness training. Not every product is tested in every environment, but all gear is evaluated against realistic use, not ideal conditions.

Is FoxtrotGear still growing its catalog?

Yes.

FoxtrotGear is intentionally selective. New products are added only when they improve a system, not just expand the catalog. Over time, this means fewer listings — but better ones.
